A class action is a lawsuit that permits individuals with similar
claims to sue on behalf of a larger group of individuals. To effectively
pursue a class action, the issues in dispute must be common to all
class members and the individuals affected must be so numerous as
to make it impracticable to bring all their claims individually
before the court.
Class actions accomplish several goals:
- First, they make it easier for individuals who have been injured
to seek compensation and other remedies by sharing the cost of
complex and time-consuming litigation among all the members of
the class;
- Second, they provide equal justice for all members of the class;
- Finally, they protect consumers by deterring companies from
committing dangerous or deceptive practices.
