We are currently representing people who have taken Baycol and experienced
detrimental side effects.
Baycol is a cerivastatin that was commonly prescribed to reduce
elevated cholesterol levels in patients who have hypercholesterolemia.
Baycol, also known as Lipobay, was marketed worldwide by Bayer A.G.
and has accounted for more than 10.6 million prescriptions.
Baycol, which has been linked to at least 52 deaths, was recalled
by Bayer on August 8, 2001. All of the Baycol deaths were reportedly
the result of rhabdomyolosis, a condition that can lead to kidney
and other organ failure and death.
More specifically, Rhabdomyolisis is a disorder that causes muscle
cells to break down and release a harmful byproduct (myoglobin)
into the bloodstream. Myoglobin, in excessive concentrations, can
lead to kidney failure and death.
Detrimental side effects associated with rhabdomyolisis include:
- muscle pain and weakness
- abnormal urine color (generally dark brown or red)
- fever
- malaise
- nausea; and
- vomiting
Other statins, such as Zocor, Pravachol and Lipitor, have also been
associated with rhabdomyolisis. However, the FDA stated that Baycol-related
deaths in the United States "have been reported significantly
more frequently than for other approved statins."
If you or a family member has taken Baycol and would like more information
